Preserving & Sharing History

A picture on St. Simons Island of a tabby cabin on Hamilton Plantation

Founded in 1928, the Cassina Garden Club is the guardian of two original tabby cabins on what was once the Hamilton Plantation. These historic cabins were the homes of enslaved people on the plantation from the 1830s until the end of slavery in 1865.

Thanks to preservation and restoration efforts, the history, culture, and experiences of the people who lived in these cabins can be shared and appreciated by visitors of all ages.

Visiting the Cabins

Cassina Garden Club’s historic tabby slave cabins are located at 1195 Arthur J. Moore Drive (just outside the entrance to Epworth by the Sea). Cabin tours are open to the public from 10:00 AM to noon every Wednesday throughout the year.

The cabins are also open on the Saturday of our Annual Christmas Bake Sale held on the second Saturday of December and on our Garden Walk which is held on the last Saturday in April.

We welcome requests to schedule private tours of the cabins by visitors to the Island, locals, and families.

  • Booking Information: Group tours must be booked at least 10 days in advance.

  • Payment: There is no charge for tours of the gardens and cabins, but donations are welcome and appreciated. A $5.00 donation per adult is suggested for private tours.

  • Amenities: The garden and cabins area has no public restroom facilities. However, there are public restrooms located at Gascoigne Park, a short driving distance (0.4 miles) from the cabins.

  • Bus Parking is available in the large lot beside the gardens.

  • Picnic facilities are available at Gascoigne Park
