Garden Descriptions/Garden Walk 2021
Marsh View Cottage
Tractor seat plants (giant ligularia) greet you as you approach the trellised entrance of this delightful cottage overlooking Bloody Marsh. After passing the blue plumbago, be sure to notice the pots of spaghetti yuccas. The front porch swing invites you to rest and relax with a good book as you take in the beauty of the garden. A fire pit welcomes you to the side courtyard, a perfect spot for entertaining. The charming lagoon and its fountain provide a place to watch the herons fish. If you wish, you are invited up to the screened porch, which can be enjoyed year round with its handsome hearth. The vintage wrought iron on either side of the fireplace is from the home of the owner's grandmother.
Shady Oasis
Cool, green serenity describes this property. The front garden is lined with ferns and sheltered by a canopy of towering oaks. The private backyard is enclosed by a fence adorned with espaliered sasanqua camellias. Imagine sipping a refreshing glass of iced tea as you enjoy the swing, with the colorful plantings around you. Artificial turf provides a year round green lawn in this shady backyard. Take a peak into the artist’s studio as you exit the backyard.
Villa Bellagio
This magnificent Italian villa on the northern end of the island will take your breath away. Marvel at the opulence and architectural wonder of this spectacular lakefront home. Beauty abounds as you wander over the four lush acres, past the tennis courts and into the secluded lakeside area. The resort sized pool and multiple terraces provide an entertainment area with incomparable lake and golf course views. The Italian influence extends to the beautiful planters overflowing with flowers that dot the property. This is elegant island living at its best.
Riverside Retreat
Expansive river and marsh views await you as you enter this low country charmer, located on the ruins of the original Hampton Plantation. Crepe myrtles greet your arrival and as you ascend the stairs onto the spacious veranda. Antique wheelbarrows full of colorful annuals flank the front door. The gracious owner invites you to walk through the house, where an extensive array of 18th and 19th century French, English and American antiques and ceramics are on display. Be sure to spot the aviary of Australian and African finches. Outside, the deer resistant plantings and magnificent live oaks frame the spectacular vistas that include the Altamaha marshes and Sapelo Island.
Cozy Colonial
Two hurricanes and 10 trees later, this garden has been transformed. What was once a shade garden, this garden, where four generations of this family enjoyed happy times, has a new lease on life. The decidedly southern garden hosts mature camellias, stunning magnolias, and live oaks. Venture around the corner by way of stepping stones salvaged from Brunswick’s old Oglethorpe Hotel, to the back garden, where an inviting guesthouse, pool and large veranda await visitors. The side yard boasts a beautiful lawn and a hammock can be found under the loblolly pine.
Black Banks Bungalow
Set among mature, festooned live oaks, the driveway leads visitors to the front entry, abundant with pots of colorful plantings. Just beyond the flowering bed of sago Palms, the path of Savannah Grey brick invites you into the garden and pool area. The screened porch provides a spacious setting for the homeowners to gather, and leads to the pool and cabana in the distance. The cabana hosts a lovely fireplace for cool evenings and hot toddies, and the herringbone design on the floor is simply a work of art.
White Columns
This garden adorns a southern coastal home overlooking the marsh. The garden begins at the front of the home where purple and pink fuchsia encircle a live oak. Follow the path to an archway that leads to a secret garden with mirrored trellises. Continue along to a trickling, stacked stone koi pond that is surrounded by native ferns. Enjoy the sweeping views for everyone who has an affinity for marshland. The path ends at the home’s lovely swimming pool with Parisian inspired mirrored trellises and gas lit sconces. A lovely place to relax and unwind.
Family Affair at Retreat
This handsome Island Club home has a porte-cochere surrounded by circular gardens of sago Palms and liriope. As visitors enter the back garden, they are greeted by a patio featuring a bubbling fountain and terra cotta planters lush with Bougainvillea. The large outdoor living space features a double sided fireplace, containers of colorful bird-of-paradise, and golf course views. The pool area is edged with palms, white drift roses and a podocarpus hedge. Three vertical statuary fountains provide plenty of privacy.
Butterfly Garden at Demere Park
The Butterfly Garden at Demere Park has been designed to welcome butterflies and encourage all four stages of butterfly development. There is plentiful milkweed for the butterflies to lay their eggs, and abundant flowers to provide them food and water. The garden was designed in 2019 with over 200 new plantings to encourage visits by the four butterfly species that call St Simons Island home. A local artist has painted stationary butterflies to fly throughout the garden and represent the Monarchs, Tiger Swallowtails, Gulf Fritillaries, and Painted Ladies found here. The garden, redesigned and maintained by Live Oak Garden Club, is enjoyed by walkers and families using the park year round.
